Is this a common occurence?

Today I got a call from "Microsoft" claiming that there were viruses being sent through my router and that I needed to turn on my computer and their tech would assist. Then their "supervisor" came on, and said essential the same thing before I hung up. It was from a Seattle-based number, despite them claiming to be from New York. I called Microsoft, and they informed me that they never call. In fact I had to give them my info, they didn't have it on record. What's going on here? FWIW, I'm from Canada.
