What would the investigation process be?

ok, this is a hypathetical for a story im writing. A murder takes place in a backyard, and there is little to know evidence, and what evidecnce there is only leads to dead ends. So, what would happen tot he family? Would they be forced to live elsewhere? How long before they released the body and a funeral commenced? Could someone just explain the general process a family member might go through?
